I've been a longtime fan of Pharoahe Monch's music. So every time I catch wind of one of his new releases, I'm chompin at the bit in anticipation of getting to hear some new material. So I was pleasantly surprised when I heard this particular remix of the original track The Grand Illusion (Circa 1973) Feat Citizen Cope, from the album W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)

This is one of those rare occasions where I can't decide whether I prefer the original track or the remix. Lyrically they're pretty much the same. The only differences between the two are the removal of an F-bomb from the PTSD track, some slightly changed/re worded second verse, and the fact that he re-recorded his verses on the remix.

Now musically they are very different. They almost feel like two different tracks, which in this case is definitely not a bad thing. The beat used in the Grand Illusion track is a very well done reproduction of the track The Court of The Crimson King by the group King Crimson. The musical changes they made to the original work particularly the drums, and a change in tempo give the audio a more needed energetic feel compared to the original which I like BTW.

The percussion used in Eht Dnarg Noisulli is a bit more laid back. A slower drum beat, vocal harmonizing, trumpets, let's just say there's a lot going on musically. It all blends together very well. I can't tell where if at all where any of the original samples came from. But I don't think that it matters. It's a well done track on a well done album. So I'm just going to post them both and you can decide for yourself which one or any that you prefer.
